For this third and final activation of REMAP: LA, we will locate ourselves within the city’s rich cultural landscape exploring cultural vibrancy, community and imagination. 

REMAP: LA features participatory intensives with stellar LA artists, pathbreakers and wayfinders to the possible.

REMAP: LA offers Cultural Community Benefits trainings, originated in Detroit and adapted for use by all advancing equity.

Learn alongside artists who boldly make work in a vision of the city connected to its history.
Jump in for a day or for an energized week of grounding walks, participatory art intensives, equity workshops, and a forum elevating how we the people are reimagining the American cultural map.
Meet your fellow artists and change makers and those looking to add more creative methods and strategies to their work. Join us!

Featured workshop artists include: installation artist Caitlin Abadir-Mullally and writer Kamala Puligandla, visual artist & Homeboy Industries mentor Fabian Debora and interdisciplinary artist Evelyn Serrano, writer & performance artist Gabrielle Civil and choreographer Tamica Washington-Miller, Grammy Award-winning artivista Quetzal Flores and trailblazing multi-disciplinary performer Nobuko Miyamoto, textile artists & cultural bearers from the Tarahat Women’s Beading Circle of the Fernandeño Tataviam Band of Mission Indians, playwright Velina Hasu Houston and master printmaker & artist Rosalie López.

Imagining a New Map forum artists include: singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc, Chicana altaristas Ofelia and Rosanna Esparza, violinist and social justice advocate Vijay Gupta, visual artist Jazmín Urrea, excerpt of Try/Step/Trip by Dahlak Brathwaite and more!

Artist-led Participatory Workshops ranging from heritage-based arts, writing, performance and beyond will offer participants new artistic tools, methodologies and approaches towards more creative and effective engagement of communities. They will take place at Casa Del Mexicano (Boyle Heights), California Institute of the Arts (Santa Clarita), Lula Washington Dance Theatre (Crenshaw), Native Voices at the Autry (Griffith Park), Rudy Ortega Sr. Park (San Fernando Valley), Self Help Graphics (Boyle Heights), and Somos LA Arte Homeboy Art Academy (East LA). 

Cultural Community Benefits trainings based on the ArtChangeUS Cultural Community Benefits Toolkit will offer institutional as well as individual cultural organizers a practical and meaningful framework for building commitments to greater diversity, equitable stakeholder relationships, and structural change within their work. Facilitated by originators of the Toolkit, ArtChangeUS team members and local LA organizers, these workshops will guide participants through arts-based exercises aimed at unpacking complex equity issues, highlighting best practices, and establishing committed goals for community benefit. The workshops will take place at the Armory Center for the Arts (Pasadena) in collaboration with Armory Center for the Arts and Learning Works, the Music Center (Downtown LA), California Institute of the Arts (Santa Clarita), and the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture (Downtown LA).

Imagining a New Map forum will feature participatory conversations and artist projects that fundamentally shift how we perceive place, people, and culture. In partnership with the Alliance of California Traditional Arts, Imagining a New Map asks: How do we co-create a future located in our understanding of the past and actions now? And how does cultural equity show up in your work? Together we can build connections and resources in community with others to change our landscape. 

Workshops and trainings will be held at multiple venues across Los Angeles County.
